The U.S. dementia rate is down by 24 percent, according to the findings of a new study, published in the JAMA Internal Medicine. Researchers carried out the study on more than 21,000 people and discovered that the rate of dementia on those above the age of 65 has fallen from 11.6 percent in 2000 to 8.8 percent in 2012.
Naturally, this is great news, however, Alzheimer’s disease and the other forms of dementia continue to bother the medical fraternity and the public at large, because there is still no cure for the disease. Furthermore, according to medical forecasts, there will be approximately 84 million Americans aged 65 by 2050, who will have to learn to live with this serious condition at home , unless a new cure is discovered.
Dementia Can Be Prevented
There is, however, new evidence that shows it may be possible to prevent dementia. Researchers are telling us that a few lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the risk of dementia, and even reverse many of its symptoms. Proper nutrition and a balanced diet, working out regularly and leading a stress-free life can all have a big impact.
Brain games are a great help too, because these games give the brain a workout, improving thinking skills and memory, which are common problems of dementia.

1. Crossword Puzzles – Any type of number or word puzzles are beneficial because they will stimulate the brain continuously and help you maintain your recall ability. Play the puzzles, discover and remember information and give different sections of your brain the exercise they need. Big puzzles can span for days, which is going to improve your long-term memory. The puzzles also stimulate problem-solving and reasoning functions, which are often severely affected by dementia.
